Hiking Trails
South Africa’s Hiking Trails are the Continent’s Best Kept Secret.
Unlike most European footpaths, which have their origins in ancient mule tracks
or simply byways between villages, many South African hiking trails were “cut” out of virgin countryside to provide amenities for the more adventurous of the “european” population.
As such, most trails are of fairly recent origin (20th Century) and concentrate on areas of greatest natural beauty. Many are in Nature Reserves and National Parks.
Without exception, they remain the finest way to enjoy the outrageous scenery of this ”Fairest Cape”.

Grading System
Hiking trails vary from short strolls to multi day hikes, often through difficult mountain terrain. We have intentionally selected day hikes involving moderately demanding walking for 4-6 hours,so that each day clients will have plenty of time to explore some of the many other sights and activities the area has to offer. We do also take people on more demanding climbs when asked for.
To help clients we have graded each walk in terms of any technical difficulty and fitness level required
Returning from the Uitkyk, Mont Rochelle. |
|
Grade A - EASY No exposure to heights |
|
 On Dutoitskop |
Grade B - TIRING Moderately exposed |
|
On the India Venster route of Table Mountain. |
Grade C - STRENUOUS Exposed and requiring some scrambling. |
|
Wolfberg Cracks. A more difficult prospect. |
Grade D - LONG & STRENUOUS Longer, strenuous climbs, requiring a full day and often reaching a high summit. |
In all cases we have assumed that our clients are reasonably fit. You do not need to be marathon runners, but you must not assume that you can arrive totally unfit and use the holiday as some kind of personal training exercise. Most of you will leave feeling fitter, but you should look upon this as a beneficial side effect, rather than the main objective of your holiday.
Our Senior Guides are trained and qualified in Mountain Leadership .
