Geology

Huge Sandstone Cliffs

The Cape region is dominated by a series of mountain ranges, mainly 1000-2000metres high. Though they stand apart, Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula are constituent parts of this geological system.

The mountains are largely composed of sandstones and quartzites on a granite base. This latter is rarely exposed, the coastal areas on Cape Point and Paarl Rocks being the obvious exceptions. The most dominant features of the mountain ranges are towering sandstone cliffs, many over 1000ft high, seared by deep, often heavily vegetated, gorges (kloofs).

Add to this scenario a flora which is unique, diverse and beautiful, and it is easy to understand why the Western Cape is a hiker’s paradise

Paarl rocks and granite domes

The sandstone rocks often have enormous bedding planes, covered in vegetation. The rocks are heavily weathered and strange and weird shapes feature in many areas.
